Sewerage System’s construction phases

Phase A of the Larnaca Sewerage System was completed during the period from 1992 -2000. It consists of 110 km of sewer pipes with a diameter of 160-800 cm, 17 sewerage pumping stations and a Sewerage Treatment Plant, which is located south of the Larnaca Airport. It also includes 9 km of drainage sewers and seven pumping stations. The cost of Phase A of the project rose to €51 million.

Phase B of the Larnaca Sewerage System will cover, with sewerage pipes, the remaining part of the city of Larnaca, part of the Aradippou Municipality and the tourist areas of Dhekelia, while drainage sewers will also be built in the city of Larnaca. Phase B will be completed by 2020. This project consists of 200 km of sewer pipes, 50 km of drainage sewers, 10 km of pressurized sewers, 2km of drainage pressurized sewers, nine new pumping stations and four new drainage pumping stations, as well as the Expansion and Upgrade of the Sewerage Treatment Plant which was completed in 2016.

Phase C of the LSDB’s Sewerage System will cover the needs of the communities of Kiti, Pervolia and the Dromolaxia – Meneou Municipality. The Sewerage System of Phase C will consist of approximately 140 km of sewer pipes and the relevant pumping stations. During the first six months of 2019 will start the review of the study regarding these communities and the preparation of the documents required for the tender calls with the purpose of calling for tenders for the first construction contract in June 2021. The construction works are expected to commence at the beginning of 2022 and be completed by 2027.

Phase B Construction Contracts

The completion of Phase B of the Sewerage System will serve the entire Municipality of Larnaca, the tourist areas of Pyla, Oroklini and Leivadia up to the interurban road leading from Larnaca to Dhekelia, as well as part of the Aradippou Municipality.

Phase B includes the construction of a sewerage system and a drainage system. In particular, it consists of 200 km of sewer pipes, 50 km of drainage sewers, 10 km of pressurized sewers, 2 km of drainage pressurized sewers, nine new pumping stations and four new drainage pumping stations. In addition, Phase B includes the expansion and upgrade of the Sewerage Treatment Plant, the capacity of which has increased from 8,500 cubic metres to 18,000 cubic metres per day (to cover needs until the year 2027) and then to 22,000 cubic metres (to cover needs until the year 2047). The construction Contract for the upgrade of the Sewerage Treatment Plant was completed in 2016.

A large part of the Larnaca Sewerage System began its operation in 2017. In particular, the system began operating in the area of Drosia (Agios Nicolaos Parish) and this concerned construction contracts C11, C13 and C16. The year 2018 was an important one since it saw the completion of the sewerage system in the area of the Larnaca New General Hospital (construction Contract C14) and the Krasas area, which falls within the municipal boundaries of Aradippou (construction contract C18). At the same time, part of the Chrysopolitissa area sewerage system started its operation (construction contract C12).

Phase C of the LSDB’s sewerage system will cover the needs of the communities of Kiti, Pervolia and the Municipality of Dromolaxia – Meneou. The Phase C sewerage system will include approximately 140 km of sewerage pipes and the relevant pumping stations. The review of the study regarding these communities and the preparation of the necessary documents regarding the call for tenders will begin during the first six months of 2019, with the purpose of calling for tenders for the first construction contract in June 2021. The construction works are expected to commence at the beginning of 2022 and be completed by 2027.
